Panjim Inn,
Goa -One of the reasons Fountainhas is a highlight
of Goa.
Review by author Marika McAdam
One of the most charming places to stay in Panaji, this beautiful mansion
from the 1800s has a large 1st-floor veranda and the fragile elegance
of a Chinese pavilion. The spacious rooms, some with four-poster beds
feature colonial furniture and are brimming with individual character.
The Panjim Inn proudly and fittingly wields the distinction of being
Goa's oldest Heritage hotel, a status that the passage of time can only
enhance. Built in the late 1800s by Francis Assis D'Silveira and still
managed by his ancestors, the 14 rooms of the Panjim Inn all evoke the
type of nostalgia that comes from reading hardback editions of the classics.
The large suite rooms have small semi-enclosed balconies, and even the
standard rooms (well, as standard as a heritage hotel room can be) have
an old-style charm that make this sleeping experience a travel experience.
The small details of the Panjim Inn stir your imagination as to who
traversed the hallways and make you wish you had packed something so
you could elegantly dress to do the same.
Panjim Pousada, Goa -A
well-renowned place that still feels like a hidden gem
Review by author Marika McAdam
In an old area of Panjim was an old Hindu house. In the Hindu house
was a courtyard. In the courtyard was an art gallery. In the art gallery
was a spiral staircase. Up the spiral staircase was a room. In the room
was one lucky bastard.
Lifestyle magazine journalists and art couture photographers would do
well to visit Panjim Pousada. The many angles of this multifarious building
would grace the pages of any glossy. Your first impression is created
at the mosaic entry, and the experience just gets better and better.
The spiral staircases and solid wooden doors that lead to the rooms
hint at the quality and class that lies therein. Colonial furniture
graces each room and tastefully minimalist touches like shelves carved
into the solid white walls also add character. The appropriation of
this resplendent home from the well-to-do Hindu family was seemingly
done without any of its former grace falling by the wayside.
Panjim Peoples, Goa - Heritage hotel heaven.
Review
by author Marika McAdam
From the people who brought the Panjim Inn to the Old Quarter comes
Panjim People's, the most decadent of them all. With the same intention
of old-world revival, the People's is a step up in elegance from the
other options in the area.
If you're lucky enough to get one of the four bright and airy rooms
in this landmark of Fountainhas, you're in for a travel treat. Rooms
truly do justice to the proud exterior of this converted heritage building.
Decadent four-poster beds, colonial-era furniture and tiled mosaic bathrooms
allow you to immerse yourself away from the entire modern world, despite
modern amenities like fridge and TV. The larger room at the back of
the building has an ornately carved antique rosewood bedhead which is
an elegant centerpiece. Each of the four rooms has slightly different
character, though all have private balconies overlooking picturesque
fragments of the Old Quarter.

Grand 300-year-old townhouse, now managed as a homely heritage hotel,
with period furniture, sepia family photos, balconies and a common veranda
where meals and drinks are served to guests. The same family runs the
even more beautiful Panjim Pousada , across the road, an old Hindu house
which gives you the chance sample what Panjim must have.
Panjim
Peoples : The Panjims Inn's latest "heritage" venture, opposite
the original house (see above) occupies a former high school. It's more
upmarket than their other two wings, but no less appealing for that.
The rooms are huge, fitted with antique rosewood furniture, gilded pelmets
and lace curtains, and the bathrooms feature the Sukhija family's hallmark
crazy-mosaic tiling. Tariffs mid-season start at around Rs5000 per night.
Frommer's Review
Situated
in Panjim's historic Fontainhas district, these are the only authentically
Goan guesthouses in Panjim. Retired engineer Ajit Sukhija and his son
Jack provide warm Goan hospitality, regaling you with local history
while proudly pointing out family photographs. The best option is the
recently opened Panjim People's, a four-room heritage hotel (until recently
a prominent local school) with spacious rooms and modern bathrooms;
ask for the room in which Ajit's mother's lovely rosewood four-poster
bed is the centerpiece. There's nothing particularly luxurious about
the restored colonial-era Hindu Pousada, but it offers a taste of Panjim's
19th-century upper-class lifestyle (along with hot water). The simple
rooms are furnished with antiques (including four-poster beds) arranged
around an empty courtyard. Windows and balconies look onto the back
streets and backyards of Panjim's old "Latin Quarter." The
Pousada's older Catholic sister, Panjim Inn, is located on an old family
property dating back to 1880; as with the Pousada, rooms vary in size
and price, so it's best to look around before deciding. You can also
browse the latest offering, Gallery Geetanjali, which showcases up-and-coming
artists.

Panjim Inn: Dans
